Anti-Plagiarism offline and online

With a lot of students plagiarizing, teachers and universities should be more aware on how plagiarism can be avoided.

Here are some tips on anti-plagiarism

  1. You should ask the students that the paper they will submit have specific traits. It should not be canned. Example, the sources and websites should be cited correctly and properly and that at least two of them should be not less than a year old, it should also have a discussion or self analysis by the student, have a survey or interview on the subject.
  2. Ask the students to have a process step, if you do not want them to pass a downloaded or purchased paper over the net, ask them to keep you updated with the progress and process of their work. Consider these few points, topic. Have them explain why they choose the topic that they choose. How do they plan to research on the topic? How do they plan to present it? Ask for preliminary bibliography. Ask for an outline. Check their rough draft before asking for the final draft. Of course this should all be done in a spread and allotted time frame.
  3. One more sure way to avoid plagiarism is to ask them to show you their sources. Ask them to attach a copy or have the sources photocopied. So you can compare their work from the original. This way the students will be think twice before copying and plagiarizing and they will be doing the hard job but learn.

Plagiarism can be avoided, but with the internet it has become easy for anyone to just copy and paste information, it is a good thing that the internet can also help in detecting works that have been plagiarized.

There are websites that you can use for free to determine whether the work that has been handed to you is a copy from the original. Make use of search engines like Google or Yahoo. You probably heard of the term “Google it”, and that is what you should do to check for originality. Just type in unusual words and sentences; words that you think are not from your student like old English, any four consecutive word that has a result on Google that is the same as the student’s paper is obviously plagiarized. You can also try using different websites like dogpile.com. The internet is not only a friend to the students it can also be a very useful tool for the faculty. Take advantage of the systems online that are for free.

You can also check the websites that are selling ready made research papers, thesis, and other stuff. If you type into the search engine of Google “Term Papers for Free”, you will be presented with several sites that offer term papers, they are most likely interconnected. This way you can match up and compare the paper of your students from the one that is available online. You can check out essayfinder.com for some ready made essay.
Those are some techniques which you can use to detect plagiarism using the internet; you can develop your own strategies that will help you detect copied paper works.
